Rubies

The Clifton Rubies was founded in the fall of the 2003 - 2004 school year by one of Clifton’s teachers, Dr. Beverly Woods, a seventh grade Reading teacher who presented the idea of Clifton’s young girls not only learning how to present themselves as young ladies in society, recognizing the value in giving back through community service, but also having fun as well was cultivated into a lovely organization of grace and elegance to exemplify the legacy of Mrs. Ruby Sue Clifton.

Mrs. Andrea Condell-Stewart and Ms. Allyson Jones, the first sponsors, started the Rubies and directing them in accomplishing the goals the organization. Fundraisers, community service projects and positive interaction activities help support the goals of the organization. The Rubies initially began with ten-eighth grade girls and fourteen-seventh grade girls. In its third year, the Rubies continue their commitment.

RUBY SUE WILCOX CLIFTON

Born April 20, 1910, in Houston County, Texas, Ruby Wilcox Clifton was educated in Grapeland, Texas and studied at Sam Houston State Teachers College and received a degree from the University of Houston. Her life was devoted to education. She served the Houston Independent School District for 38 years, finishing her career as Assistant Superintendent of Board Services.  In 29 years of HISD Board meetings, she had a perfect attendance record for which she was honored with a commemorative plaque.

Her greatest pride was her namesake Ruby Sue Clifton Middle School, which was dedicated in 1979.  Miss Ruby taught by example, and in her 70 years of service to our community, she was called upon again and again to provide her graceful yet strong leadership in times of need.  Ms. Ruby Sue Clifton passed way on March 5, 2005 at the wonderful age of 94.
