Ruby Sue Clifton Middle School

Clifton is a unique, transitional school designed to help students move from elementary to secondary education with maximum success and minimum frustration. Special characteristics of Clifton are listed below.

STUDENT - TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS - The teacher is a guide and an advisor; he/she provides a wide range of experiences and assists and supports students in their efforts to learn.

TEACHER ORGANIZATION - Interdisciplinary teams collaborate to prepare and to teach thinking-based lessons that stimulate interest and involvement.

CURRICULUM - Learning is facilitated by a three-faceted, student-oriented curriculum: (1) personal development (counseling, creativity, health-physical growth through intramural sports); (2) skills of continued learning (independent study, problem solving, critical thinking); and (3) use of organized knowledge (systematic instruction of English, reading, mathematics, science, and social studies).

SCHEDULE - Team scheduling meets instructional needs and provides flexibility.

INSTRUCTION - A balance in directive and self-directive activities is advocated, as are independent study, inquiry-oriented investigation, discussion, and varied cooperative group instruction with diverse methods of presentation.

STUDY GROUPING - Individuality is continually encouraged in a guidance-oriented setting.  Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Gifted and Talented (GT), Pre Advanced Placement (PreAP), and regular classes are designed to meet the needs of all
students.

GUIDANCE SERVICES - Each student is a member of a homebased group led by an assistant principal and a professional counselor on his/her grade level.

TEACHER PREPARATION - Clifton teachers are flexible, resourceful, and creative. Moreover, they are able to apply learning theories to instructional practices and to facilitate the student’s personal growth.

BUILDING ORGANIZATION - Academic classrooms, learning labs, and a learning theater provide opportunities for a wide range of exploratory and/or fundamental activities.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS - Programs to inform, to entertain, to educate, and to understand the community are a part of the basic operation of the middle school.

RUBY SUE CLIFTON MIDDLE SCHOOL offers programs in which all students are important, can succeed, and are involved.
